Destination Paris: Where to Stay

It can be tempting to stay in chain hotels when you travel, whether it’s to rack up rewards or stay in your comfort zone, but when in Paris, I recommend going local and boutique. It’s important to note that most of the hotel rooms are tiny – similar to those in New York City – so keep that in mind when selecting rooms for more than two people.

Here are three budget-friendly hotels that I love in the City of Lights:

1. Mama Shelter – This chic, modern boutique hotel has a vibrant rooftop so stellar that Vogue dubbed it one of the best in the city back in June. During the summer, guests head there to enjoy a meal or a cocktail as they eye panoramic views of the city.

Touting itself as a place that “offers shelter from the intrusions of the outside world” this hidden gem also features a popular restaurant with homemade dishes created by Guy Savoy, like deconstructed Lyon sausage in a brioche bun and chicken gyozas. There is also a huge island bar and a pizzeria on deck. As for the rooms, they’re fairly simplistic, but chic, with 100% cotton satin sheets, a 27″ iMac, free WIFI and a minibar on deck.

2. Hotel Ares Eiffel: I stayed here with friends last year and loved it. It had a chic, modern vibe from the time we stepped into the swanky lobby lounge that came complete with a faux zebra skin rug.  It was about a 15-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower, but far enough away that we didn’t have to deal with flocks of tourists. The staff was nice and the rooms were contemporary, with comfy bedding, plush velvet curtains, and a tall patterned headboard. To take things up a notch, the bathroom was stocked with Hermes toiletries.

3. Hotel du Champ de Mars: Tucked away on a quiet street near the Eiffel Tower, this charming boutique hotel is also right around the corner from the Rue cler, known for its cafés, boulangeries and specialty shops like gelato cafe Amorino and trendy Tribeca cafe. With its floral curtains and cozy digs, this low key den also features views of the Eiffel in some rooms, and small floral courtyards in others.
